I pulled my hair from its braid, combing through the strands as they fell down my back and around my shoulders. Sammie smiled as she walked toward me, the hostess disappearing behind the bar after typing a few things into the tablet on the stand.

“Bryson said they should be here soon. She’s going to get the table prepped. I need to find the restroom. You good?”

Not really. That odd current under my skin was back, making me want to scratch at my skin to figure out where it was coming from. Was this what the men had been feeling since leaving Denver?

I managed a decent smile and nodded, not trusting my voice.

Once she was out of sight, the sensation got worse, and I scratched at my collarbones while looking at the soccer game playing in the bar.

“Addison.”

The deep, cracking voice made the hairs on my neck rise, and I held back a flinch by the skin of my teeth. Pressing my hands into my belly, I turned toward the voice, keeping my face carefully neutral.

Gideon’s hair was styled in those spikes again, his two-piece suit a dark charcoal, his tie a light purple. His gaze was intense, his mouth held tight, the laughing lines around the corners more noticeable from the tension. The buzzing under my skin grew worse, and my fingers trembled where they traced the hem of my sweater. He cocked an eyebrow as I hesitated in responding.

“Hello,” I finally offered in a whisper.

He tucked his hands into his pockets. “I hear you’ve managed to convince Samantha to leave the safety of Spokane.”

That same warning shiver from our first meeting shot down my spine, making my pulse race. I kept the mate bond all but closed, stopping the flow of my emotions across it. A taste of curiosity filtered from Tobias, but I didn’t respond. Leaning on the formalities I’d heard used between my father and Joel, I offered the simplest version of truth to the Other.

“Samantha and Bryson petitioned the Regent of their own accord. I wasn’t informed until the paperwork had been started.”

He pursed his lips and took a step closer to me. “I’ve been told that you surprised the Alpha. You seem to have a way of twisting Shifters around your finger. I wonder if someone from Blue Ridge is also twisted up over you?”

The question was a carrot dangled on a stick, just like the comment Marcus had made about Bryson’s mother. That warning shiver grew, flooding me with a sense of self-perseveration, and I kept from thinking of Sammie’s brother the last time I’d seen him. I offered my first half-lie.

“I wouldn’t know. I’ve had no contact with Blue Ridge since reconnecting with Rocky Mountain.”

The silence stretched between us, the stillness of the restaurant making me anxious. Where was the hostess? And Sammie?

Just like in his office, the feeling of being caged suddenly disappeared, and I found myself able to breathe again. He offered his hand. When I took it, a flash of warmth shot up my spine, flaring across my shoulder blades and settling at the base of my skull.
